Local Information
Restaurants:
Croydon’s hugely-popular Restaurant Quarter in South End, has an amazing array of eateries inspired by cultures from home and across the globe, which even the fussiest of eaters would be hard-pressed to complain about.
Dining options in South Croydon also include The Treehouse, which has its own signature burger, nearby the Croydon Steak House, opened in 1967, pledges “a steak as big as you like”. Galicia offers Spanish tapas and Khyber’s menu features classical Indian dishes with a contemporary twist.
For Italian food lovers, Ponte Nuovo pledges a touch of Milan glamour with its cool bright interior while Beijing Cottage’s menu features Peking and Cantonese cuisine from delicious duck to luscious lobster.
A short walk south to the end of the restaurant quarter, you’ll find Bagatti’s, a popular Italian that’s been in the area for 25 years, serving up the likes of antipasti and bruschetta, cuttlefish and raw beef.
Just a few doors away is Malcolm John’s Michelin-listed Brasserie Vacherin, a French bistro with moules marineres (mussels in white wine and shallot sauce), smoked duck and lamb brochette on its menu. The stylish Txt Bar offers contemporary bar food such as platters, pulled pork burgers and halloumi wraps.
In the heart of central Croydon, at the Clocktower Café, you’ll find the perfect place to combine culture, coffee (or Fairtrade Tea) and cake. This eaterie is based in the Croydon Clocktower, home to Croydon museum, library and David Lean cinema.
Yet, if you fancy something stronger, just next door is The Spread Eagle ale and pie house (with plenty of other dishes on the menu if pie isn’t your thing), set in a former bank and presided over by a golden eagle statue.
Another venue that combines culture and food is Matthew’s Yard, which has an art gallery and studios, with Hoodoo’s serving tea and coffee, and BRGR & Beer offering home-made organic beef burgers and craft beers. And if you want something swift and al fresco, why not try out Surrey Street Market’s food to go stalls. The market is something of an institution in Croydon, dating back to 1237 and is well supported by locals.
