It’s Streets Ahead every time for Nick and Marina

Between them Nick Durkin and Marina Steel have almost 35 years of service with Streets Ahead. As valued members of the 80 strong Streets Ahead team they contribute greatly to the success of the company. We asked them about their work – and how they like to spend their time away from the office.

1. How long have you worked at Streets Ahead?
Nine years this month.

2. What is your job and what does it involve?
Lettings Manager of the Crystal Palace branch. My responsibilities are looking after the day to day running of the department – this ranges from training / developing my team of lettings consultants, carrying out market appraisals and business development. I also feel it’s very important to build relationships in the lettings industry and have a long term outlook particularly with landlords, having worked in the same office for nine years and successfully built a lot of these relationships we see the benefit with a lot of repeat business due to this.

3. What do you enjoy most about your job and how has it changed?
I really enjoy that fact that every day is different. I also enjoy developing staff and seeing them improve. My job has changed massively from when I first started – when I joined Streets Ahead I was a trainee lettings consultant with no experience of the industry so everything was brand new and I really had to start from the basics. Compare that to today, and it is a million miles away as I am now responsible for my own department and staff. Also Crystal Palace as an area has changed a lot for the better and this has had an impact on rents we are achieving, which nine years ago would have been unheard of.

4. What do you do when you are not working?
I live in Carshalton with my long term partner and six year old son Jack. Outside of work I enjoy spending quality time with the family- we work very long hours so this time is very important to me. I am a massive Manchester United supporter and enjoy watching them as much as possible and going up to Manchester when I can. I also enjoy running the Streets Ahead 5-a side team and recently was heavily involved in organising the Streets Ahead Foundation 5-a side tournament at Whyteleafe Football Club which was a great success!

5. Why do you like working at Streets Ahead?
I really enjoy working for Streets Ahead as the company is always trying to move forward and implement new ideas to stay ahead in a very competitive industry. The owners Bob and Gary are also great people to work for and have both helped develop me over the years. It’s very rare to find owners who are so approachable and hands on – there is also a real family atmosphere within the office due to a large number of the team having worked together for many years

1. How long have you worked at Streets Ahead?
I have been here 25years – last year I was thrilled to receive a Rolex watch from the company for being the longest serving member of staff.

2. What is your job and what does it involve?
Senior sales consultant in the Croydon office. It’s still all about finding someone their dream house. I find I am now selling to the children of clients I suited 25years ago!!

3. What do you enjoy most about your job and how has it changed?
I love my job and still get a buzz from tying a deal. The job has changed a lot – computers have been invented, I like the personal touch, which is just as well as my computer skills are not that good!

4. What do you do when you are not working?
My hobby is my 15 month old puppy Doberman whom I adore. I love walking him and just being with him.

5. Why do you like working at Streets Ahead?
I love working here as every day is different. I love the feeling of calling a vendor to say we have a fantastic offer on their property – and handing keys over to first time buyers for their first ever property.
