Free events to suit every taste in October
In the lead-up to the launch festival for Boxpark Croydon on 29 and 30 October Croydon Council is helping support and promote a series of events around the town that will appeal to a wide range of tastes.
On Friday 21 October St George’s Walk will come alive with the sounds of live music from the ever-popular Hackney Colliery Band, described on Radio 2 as ‘one of the greatest lives bands we have in this country’, and by The Times as ‘reinventing the brass band format for the 21st Century’.
The free event will run from 4.30 to 9.30pm and is the first in a series of nights that will run for the next few months under the banner of ‘CROWD’. Funded by the council and the Croydon BID, the aim is to give Croydon’s nightlife a new boost. Expect street food, bars and more of the best bands on the touring circuit
Saturday 22 October sees more free entertainment, with a Diwali Mela stage in North End during the day and two ‘New Rose: 40 Years of Croydon Punk’ events in St Georges Walk from 4pm and at the Oval Tavern from 7pm.
The Diwali event runs between noon and 5pm as Croydon celebrates the ancient Hindu ‘festival of lights’. A stage outside the Whitgift Centre will be the focal point for dancing and music, and you can expect some great Indian food and sweets as well.
The weekend is rounded off on Sunday 23 October with the first performance from the London Mozart Players (23 October) in their new home at St John’s church in Upper Norwood. Their first public performance is suitable for the whole family and runs from 3pm to 5pm. It’s free, but booking is advised through the LMP website:http://londonmozartplayers.com/concert/launch/.
